The only thing the boxing world knows for sure about the upcoming Manny Pacquiao-Lucas Matthysse fight is that both fighters are in training camp and appear to be working hard. But according to media reports, the fight might be in jeopardy because of the event’s financial issues.

According to ESPN, Pacquiao’s promotion company, MP Promotions, has only made a payment of $500,000 to Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) and his promoter Golden Boy and still owes them $2 million more for the July 14 fight. The rest of the payment reportedly is more than a month overdue, and MP Promotions also has reportedly missed other deadlines that would cover production costs and the ability to put the fight on PPV.

It’s unclear how exactly the fight will be shown in America, though the ESPN network or the ESPN+ app are the most likely options. Top Rank, Pacquiao’s longtime promoter which is involved heavily with ESPN and ESPN+, is negotiating the U.S. TV distribution (Top Rank reportedly is not handling any other aspect of the event, set to take place in Kuala Lampur).

According to Filipino news outlet ABS-CBN News, though, the fight is still on schedule to be contested.

“The fight is on,” Arnold Vegafria, business head of MP Promotions, told ABS-CBN. “Everything is being arranged and on schedule . . . Both Pacquiao and Matthysse are training hard in their respective camps to give the fans that will be viewing the fight all over the world an action-packed, competitive battle.”

If the fight is postponed, though, it sounds like Top Rank’s Bob Arum has a backup plan for Matthysse.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with the fight, but if it doesn’t happen, I would hope to talk to Golden Boy about having Matthysse fight [Terence] Crawford,” Arum told ESPN.

If the fight is canceled, both stand to lose plenty of money. Matthysse made $210,000 in his last fight vs. Tewa Kiram in January, and he stands to earn exponentially more vs. Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs), who made at least $10 million in his loss to Jeff Horn.
